So clever we can now measure!

Over the past two weeks we have been looking at measurement in mathematics, in particular length.  First we had a discussion about what kind of objects we can use to measure length. We then talked about these objects being called "units" and that when measuring we must keep these units the same. We have been using informal units to measure to build a solid foundation for this area.  We have spent time using may different informal units to measure things around our classroom like our hands, pop sticks, counters, blocks and our very own teddy bear rulers.

Have a look at the following activities we have completed over the past couple of weeks to practice what we have learnt about measuring length.

We made these teddy bear rulers to find how many teddy bears long objects around our classroom are and to reinforce some rules we must take into consideration when measuring length. We learnt that there must be no gaps, no overlapping and that the length is determined by the number of units laid end to end, that make up the distance from one point to another.

We have also made a teddy bear height chart, we will measure how many teddy bears tall we are at the end of the year and see how much we have grown.

Last week we measured objects around our classroom that were one metre long or close to one metre long with a piece of one metre string. This is what we recorded then brainstormed as a class.

This week we used our big book Little Red Riding Hood to help us measure! We measured the length of pictures from Little Red Riding Hood's basket using five different units (paper clips, blocks, counters, match sticks and pom poms). Thanks to Miss Wallace for the wonderful idea.
