Chinese New Year 2015

Happy Chinese New Year!

As a part of our Asian study, today we celebrated and took some time to delve into the Chinese culture. We made some amazing dragon masks and lanterns. We learnt that the New Year is a time of family reunion, where families gather and have large feasts.

Our lanterns were created to celebrate the lantern festival held on the fifteenth day of the first month. People carry these beautifully decorated and crafted lanterns to an evening parade under the light of the full moon. A major event during the lantern festival is the dragon dance. To us they may be mythical, fire breathing creatures but to the Chinese, dragons are linked to good luck, long life and wisdom. The dragon dances on new years day to scare away evil spirits. Can you believe they can be up to 100m long?

Buddy up!

We are incredibly lucky to go to school at YBPS where the big waves and little waves can learn, play and create together. Over the course of the year, we will buddy up with Mr Axton & Room 17. Our little waves met the big waves from year 5/6 for the first time last week and it has already become Room 6's favourite subject. Buddy class allows us to engage with students in our school who we would not normally have the opportunity to work closely with and create lasting friendships. We are looking forward to all the wonderful activities we will complete together and the skills we will learn from each other.

Oh the places you'll go...

At the beginning of each new term this year, we will be encouraging the students to create goals to work towards over the course of the term. The students were asked to develop a list of their own personal goals and to make it achievable and specific to their personal aspirations. Have a look at some of the wonderful goals that our students have developed. It is an admirable testament to their zeal and ambition, even at such a young age!

Welcome to the First Grade!

Welcome parents and students to the first grade with Mrs Duffy! We have had an incredibly fabulous start to the term, learning new things about each other every day. I have been privileged to teach year one classes for four years in a row and it is certainly the best year in my opinion :). I look forward to sharing many new learning experiences and building fond relationships with you throughout what promises to be an exciting year. I will leave you now with a fantastic quote by the one and only Dr Seuss, "Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So... get on your way".
